I always hated it when my art teachers wanted me to sketch first. My planning is mostly in my head though sometimes I take a few photos and write down some notes. Mostly I just dive right in to something new. As for your gnocchi, my grandmother once said that sometimes the food that doesn't look so pretty is the one that tastes better. : ) I don’t much care for sketch books either.
